Shima Block Print

Shima Block Print

Block printing is a special form of fabric printing that first involves production of the original document. Craftsmen then carve the design into the wood block to prepare it for printing. Block prints are done by eye, and telltale signs of the human hand, even imperfections, are part of the ineffable humanity and beauty of the craft.

Shima-Shima or Stripe-Stripe is a traditional cotton cloth originating from the southwest of Japan. It is a vertically striped cotton cloth that was prized throughout Japan to make the hakama and the obi.

Woven with pre-dyed cotton yarn, technically much more warp than weft, the cloth shows clear vertical stripes (shima) and the marvelous three-dimensional effect the stripes create is the most distinctive feature of the weaving.
