Shima Plaid Boro

Shima Plaid Boro

Shima-Shima or Stripe-Stripe is a traditional cotton cloth originating from the southwest of Japan. It is a vertically striped cotton cloth that was prized throughout Japan to make the hakama and the obi.

This pillow reflects Boroboro, meaning something tattered or repaired. Boro refers to the practice of reworking and repairing textiles through piecing, patching and stitching, in order to extend their use. You can see the patchwork throughout using sashiko stitching as the method of mending.
